Newspapers in Education: Baltimore Sun

Overview

Newspapers in Education product logo

The Baltimore Sun newspaper is an excellent information source for local, national, and global news, commentary, sports, and entertainment. Through the Newspapers in Education (n.i.e.) program, students have free access to the daily digital edition. Teachers and librarians will find newspaper content useful for engaging students in current events, making real world curriculum connections, appealing to personal interests, and promoting news literacy. 

  • Target Audience:  Grades 6-12

  • Content Connections:  All 

  • Access:  Each Middle School, High School, and Alternative Center, and eLearning has its own subscription to The Sun during the school year (August-June).  From the link on the BCPS Digital Content Access Page, users will be prompted for their school's Username and Password. 

    • Library Media Specialists at secondary schools and Staff Development Teachers at Alternative Centers/eLearning will provide students and teachers with the unique Username and Password for their school's subscription. Other teachers may set up their own free Classroom account here. Note that subscriptions are for student learning.

    • Contact BCPS Library Media Programs at 443-809-4035 with questions about access.

ISTE Standards for Students

    • 3. Knowledge Constructor- Students critically curate a variety of resources using digital tools to construct knowledge, produce creative artifacts and make meaningful learning experiences for themselves and others.

Features & Learning Supports

  • Digital access to the full daily edition, with limited access to archived editions. 

  • Articles, editorials, opinions, photographs, data, political cartoons, comics, and more.

  • Display is Touch Screen Friendly/optimized.

  • Click/tap an article for read-aloud, highlighting, annotation, and translation options.

  • Use the navigation bar at the top of the window to:

    • Adjust page size or display options using icons on the left.

    • Use arrows in the center to navigate pages.

    • Search the edition for articles on a particular topic.

    • Create a clipping.

    • Select the Share symbol for quick access to share via email or social media.

    • Select the Section List  (bulleted hamburger menu) to go to a particular section.

  •  Visit the Sun Media Group's Newspapers in Education homepage for CCSS-aligned Interactive Lessons designed to accompany new stories each week (updated every Monday). Before logging in at the homepage, pull down the Lessons menu as shown here:
