World Book Advanced is a comprehensive reference database that includes full encyclopedic and multimedia content, supplemented with links to vetted external content and special features, including: 

  • Featured Content carousel on homepage.

  • In the Headlines at top of homepage:  Links to external articles about current events.

  • Research & Resources menu (at top right of homepage) with special features including:

    • Behind the Headlines:  Backgrounders on current events, including weekly quizzes and lesson plans.

    • Government Websites from Maryland, the United States, and other countries around the world.

    • Interactive Maps & Timelines

    • Pathfinders & Resource Guides

    • Today in History

    • World Newspapers

    • World Resources: Interactive Maps, Atlas, Compare Places feature.

Educator Resources

    • Select Educator Tools under the Research & Resources menu on the homepage for access to:

      • Curriculum Correlations

      • Lesson Plans & WebQuests 

      • Teaching with Documents:  Lesson plans focusing on one or more primary sources, featuring historical background text, enlargeable images, discussion questions, worksheets, and book lists.

ISTE Standards for Students

    • 3. Knowledge Constructor- Students critically curate a variety of resources using digital tools to construct knowledge, produce creative artifacts and make meaningful learning experiences for themselves and others.

Features & Learning Supports

  • Choose Basic Search or Advanced Search, providing Browse Options, Boolean Search, Lexile Search, or limit by Date, Content, Full Text, etc.  

  • Search Results grouped by format.

  • Articles include tabs with links to relevant Standards; Images, Videos & Audio; and Related Information (Primary Sources, related Encyclopedia articles, Back in Time articles, Special Reports, Websites, Magazine articles, Curriculum Correlations, and Questions to help students jump-start their research.

  • Article Contents hamburger menu includes section headings for longer articles and article Lexile.

  • Tools & Settings cog includes options for viewing, saving, printing, translating text, text size.

  • Embedded Dictionary: Double-click on any word in an article for a pop-up definition.

  • Translation of all articles into over 20 languages.

  • Read-aloud available for every article.

  • Pre-formatted Citations in multiple styles provided at the end of each article.

  • Lexiles: Click the Article Contents hamburger menu at the top of an article to see its Lexile score.  

    • Use Advanced Search to narrow by Lexile range.

    • Use the Reading Level Correlations chart to match Lexile to grade level.
